When I tell parents that they can teach their kids music in the homeschool, one of the questions I hear over and over again, is where do I begin?

So today, I thought I should address this issue and show you how you can categorize music activities into different themes and then use those themes to introduce kids to music appreciation in the homeschool.

You can either decide to try out a single theme per week, or even try out a single theme per month.

In this post I’m going to cover four different themes and show you how you can expand on each of these themes and teach your pre-schoolers music appreciation in the homeschool.

However, if you want a more comprehensive set of activities with a different theme per month, then please read my post 12 Innovative Musical Themes To Use In Your Homeschool.

Anyway, as always I have included printables exclusively for this post, so please don’t forget to download them, before you move on.

So without further ado, let’s get started.

Composer Studies

Yes, you can teach composer studies to kids as young as 6 years.

So what exactly will you do?

You can have them read composer biographies, learn facts about the life and works of the composer, write short essays, create lap books and much more.

For more ideas read my post, 7 ‘Ultra Fun’ Composer Studies Activities For 6 – 9 Year Olds.

Instrument Studies

Yes, 6 – 9 year olds are not too young for instrument studies either, they can have so much fun with these activities, such as creating playlists of songs that are performed only on a cornet and so on, comparing and contrasting the songs with those performed on a clarinet, learning facts about the cornet, learning about the brass family and much more.

Read my post, 5 ‘Awesome’ Instrument Study Activities For 6 – 9 Year Olds for more ideas.

Eras in Music

Kids of this age group are very interested in the medieval times and such, so what better way to introduce them to music, other than through its history?

If you pick this theme, you can introduce them to significant political events that took place during an era, composers who lived during that era, life during the era and how it influenced their music and much more.

Read my post, 7 ‘Super Easy’ Ways To Introduce The History Of Music To Primary School Kids for even more ideas on how to expand on this theme.

Music Genre Studies

Genres of music are everywhere and your primary school aged kids have no doubt been exposed to many different genres without their knowledge.

Now, it is time for you to structure that learning and make them more aware of it.

Select a few genres to study in depth, create a playlist for each genre, listen to the playlist in the background in your homeschool and then learn about the composers, musicians and instruments that play an important role in each of those genres.

Need more ideas? No worries, read my post, 4 ‘Simply Exhilarating Ways To Introduce Different Genres Of Music To Primary School Kids.

Don’t you think these ideas are really fun and will engage your kids for hours on end?

Try it out in your homeschool and come back and let me know how it went.

Remember, to download the worksheets I have made available for you.

6 ‘Ridiculously’ Simple Ways To Bring Music Into Your Homeschool Without Private Lessons

6 ‘Ridiculously’ Simple Ways To Bring Music Into Your Homeschool Without Private Lessons

6 ‘Ridiculously’ Simple Ways To Bring Music Into Your Homeschool Without Private Lessons

One of the greatest regrets of older homeschoolers and unschoolers, is that for various reasons they were unable to bring music into their homeschools.

When I speak to many of them they always say, ‘if only we had the resources that are now available, back in the day, then we could have taught our kids music too’.

While I do sympathize with them, I also know many homeschooling parents who tend to think that there is no alternative to teaching their kids, other than to hire a private music teacher.

So in this post, I’m going to show you six ways in which, you can bring music into your homeschool without private lessons.

Let me start off with one of my favourite ways to do so.

Composer Studies

You can incorporate composer studies, in your homeschool routine by having your kids research and learn about a specific composer a month.

Another method to do this is to encourage your kids to read composer biographies, whether online or through books that they borrow from the library.

Want more ideas on how you can incorporate composer studies into your homeschool? Then read my post, 4 ‘Unimaginably’ Easy Ways To Incorporate Composer Studies Into Your Homeschool Curriculum.

Instrument Studies

Similar to composer studies, you can pick a specific instrument to study and have your kids totally immerse themselves in the research about the instrument and listen to instrumental music for that specific instrument.

For more ideas on how you can incorporate instrument studies into your homeschool routine, read my post 6 Ways To Incorporate Instrument Studies Into Your Homeschool.

Online Courses

Not only can you teach your kids to play musical instruments like the piano through online courses, but you can also have them take a variety of different music appreciation courses.

Want your children to learn to play the piano, then sign up right now for my FREE piano course and have them Reading Music Notes and Playing the Piano in less than 5 Days.

Want to try out some music appreciation courses that I have on offer. You and check out the FREE options right now (ideal for kids between 4 – 14).

If you have kids who want to learn instruments like the recorder, ukulele or guitar, then you can read my recommendations for such courses in this post 5 Best Elementary Music Courses For Kids.

History And Literature Studies

If you do history and literature studies with your kids, then you can blend in music appreciation along with these studies.

For instance if you celebrate Black History Month, then why not study about Black Musicians.

If your kids are learning about Shakespeare for instance you can have them research about the composers who lived during the time of Shakespeare.

For more ideas on how you can blend music into other subjects that your children are already learning, read my post on 5 Ways To Blend Music With Other Subjects.

Music Theory

You can teach your kids music theory or find an online course that will do so.

Learning music theory has a variety of different benefits, it helps with sight reading, music composition and many more areas that are crucial for a well rounded musical learning.

Hymn Studies

Hymn Studies are another really lovely way to incorporate music into your homeschool. Whether it is through the study or singing of each hymn.

Now, I would love to know which of the above strategies you will be incorporating in to your homeschool routine today.

What are you waiting for?

This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.

7 ‘Super Cool’ Ways To Help Your Kids Appreciate Music & Learn About The Planets

7 ‘Super Cool’ Ways To Help Your Kids Appreciate Music & Learn About The Planets

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

There is nothing that I love more than to blend two subjects together.

I have found that when kids learn music through other subjects, like history, geography or science, the learning becomes more natural and also really fun for them, thus, increasing their curiosity as well as attention span.

In this post, I will be explaining how you can introduce music to your kids through the study of planets.

Yes, you can do this irrespective of their age and here I will make suggestions and recommendations of activities, which will be suitable for kids of different age groups like pre-schoolers, primary school aged kids, tween and teens.

I have also created a printable with worksheets for different age groups, which you can download.

Ready to get started?

Listen

Have you heard of Gustav Holst?

He composed an orchestration named the Planets with eight movements, one for each planet.

Find the orchestration online and listen to it many times.

You can have this playing in the background in your homeschool, you can even discuss the differences in tune and the emotions it invokes and much more.

Even with younger kids you can start up a discussion asking them which one of the movements they like the most and why? Which one sounds the scariest or saddest and so on.

With older kids you can discuss the dynamics and how it affects the mood of the piece.

Composer Study

While older kids can carry out a research study of Gustav Holst, with younger kids, you can just introduce the composer in terms of his country of birth, year of birth, his other compositions etc.

Use the printable I have made available to engage the little ones.

Research

Did you know that many other composers like Vivaldi and Beethoven for instance were also inspired by the planets and other heavenly bodies in our solar system?

Have you heard the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven or Vivaldi’s Four Seasons?

Ask older kids to research and find other compositions that were inspired by our solar system and create a playlist.

Once they’ve created the playlist, even younger kids can benefit from it, because they will automatically learn these pieces and be able to recognize it.

Take An Online Course

My course the Solar System Symphony is a 12 Unit Online course, that focuses on the Sun, Moon, all eight planets, plus Pluto, and asteroids and more.

In the course, I not only introduce your kids to the music that was inspired by our solar system but also the planets themselves and the course is for kids between ages 4 – 17.

Why not take a course like this? And have at least a semester worth of music appreciation material for your kids?

You can own the course for life, use it with as many kids and for as long as you want?

Check out the preview unit and use the 50% off coupon to get this course at the sale price.

Compare and Contrast

Another great activity for older kids is to compare and contrast two movements or two compositions about the planets or the solar system with one another.

Again, please look at the printable I have made available expressly for this purpose, with younger kids you can just discuss two movements and contrast them orally.

Critically Analyse

Older kids can take the comparison a step further by selecting just one movement or one composition to critically analyse in depth. They can discuss the instruments used, the dynamics of the piece, how the dynamics and instruments used came together to portray the planet, how it made them feel, did they like it or not, if given the opportunity what would they change and why?

Planets And The Movements

Another great activity for older kids would be to learn about the planet in depth, and how it is portrayed in Greek mythology (see you’ve now blended a whole new subject).

Next, go back to the previous activity and critically analyse the movement and compare it to the scientific profile of the planet and then again compare it to the Greek mythological profile of the planet.

Doesn’t that just sound like fun?

Can you think of more ideas on how you can combine the study of science and music?

Please comment below.

6 ‘Unbelievably Simple’ Ways To DIY A Composer Studies Unit

6 ‘Unbelievably Simple’ Ways To DIY A Composer Studies Unit

6 ‘Unbelievably Simple’ Ways To DIY A Composer Studies Unit

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Do you know that it doesn’t have to be difficult to DIY a composer study unit in your homeschool?

Really it doesn’t.

I know, I know. You just don’t have the time to look through tons of YouTube videos, nor to spend hours finding clipart and creating printables.

Yes, I understand, and that is why I’m giving you all the tools that you will need.

So just stay with me and read through this post.

Once you are done reading, download the printables I have made available and decide if you can do it or not.

Ready?

Then, let’s get started.

Decide On The Age Group

Yes, this is the first step.

Simply decide on the age group.

This is important because the next step will depend on the age of your children.

If you have many kids of varying ages, then you will have to group them as best as you can.

For instance you can have a 6 – 9 age group and 13 – 15 age group.

Decide On Activities

Now, in this step you have to decide on the type of activities.

Activities will vary according to the age of the kids.

For younger kids, there will be more story telling and colouring activities, for older kids there can be more research oriented activities.

Activities can be grouped into

Listening – Good for all ages

Hands On – Colouring, writing etc

Hands Off – Activities like going to the museum or cultural centre to learn about the composer and the music.

Pick A Composer

Now, it is time to pick a composer.

If you are finding it hard to make this decision, then the best way to set about doing it, is to decide on a musical genre (jazz, pop, rock) or an era in music (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary) and then narrow the search down from there.

Find Printables

Now that you’ve decided on the age group and the composer, it is time to look for printables.

You can either purchase printables on a site like Teachers Pay Teachers or you can simply use the printables I have made available with this post, right now.

Create A Playlist

This is easy isn’t it?

Put your Amazon, Apple or Spotify subscription to good use and create a playlist of songs by the composer of choice.

Play the music in the background throughout the next whole week or month in your homeschool.

Isn’t that easy?

Blend, Blend, Blend

Finally, you blend, blend, blend.

Yes, blend in music with other subjects.

For instance, is your composer of choice Antonio Vivaldi? Well then, why not learn about Italy (Vivaldi was Italian) for geography and learn about the Baroque era (Vivaldi lived during the Baroque era) for history?

Now you get it don’t you?

Simple isn’t it?

Don’t forget to download the printable I have made available.

Please come back and tell me how you implemented these ideas in your homeschool.

3 ‘Never Thought Of’ Ways To Introduce The Carnival Of The Animals To Tweens

3 ‘Never Thought Of’ Ways To Introduce The Carnival Of The Animals To Tweens

3 ‘Never Thought Of’ Ways To Introduce The Carnival Of The Animals To Tweens

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

When I say Carnival of the Animals and Tweens in the same sentence, most homeschool moms look at me in surprise.

Yes, that is correct.

Camille Saint Saens’ Carnival of the Animals is not only for little kids, when combined with age appropriate activities, the composition can be used to introduce tweens and even teens to music appreciation.

In today’s post I will focus especially on tweens, even though some of the ideas suggested here can also be used to engage teens in learning to appreciate music.

Don’t forget to download the worksheets I have made available to help increase your tween’s engagement with the composition and the composer.

Compare Movements

It is important to ensure that your tween listens to all the movements first. So make sure to create a playlist and ask him to listen to all the movements.

Next, ask him to select two movement (favourite and least favourite, or first and last, or lion and elephant etc) and compare the two.

How should he compare them?

He can use the worksheets I have made available and the prompts should get him started immediately.

Instruments

As you may already know each of the movements depicts a different set of animals.

In this activity you can ask your tween to analyse if the instruments used appropriately depict the animal or if a different choice of instruments would have been better etc?

Again, you can use the worksheets I have made available to get your tween engaged in this activity.

Composer And The Era In Music

With this activity your tween can delve into a research project to learn about Camille Saint Saens, his early childhood, education, compositions, contribution to music as well as how the Romantic era in music influenced him etc.

What do you think of the above ideas?

Can you do it?

Please comment below and let me know, which activity your tween enjoyed the most.
