One really easy, yet sadly overlooked method to get pre-school kids into music is to have them watch movie musicals.

Watching movies is something most kids like to do, so as a homeschool mom, don’t you think, using movies to get them into music would be a phenomenal idea?

Well, it would be.

Read through this post and learn how you can use movie musicals to introduce your little pre-schooler to music appreciation.

Don’t forget to download the adorable printables I have made available just for you.

Ready?

Then, let’s get started.

Song

The easiest and simplest activity after watching the movie is to ask your little one, what her favourite song was from the movie.

You can probe a little further and ask her why she chose that song over the rest.

Even though she may not have the musical vocabulary to articulate her preference, you’d be surprised at her reasoning, so don’t be shy, ask.

Anlysis

The next step is to talk to her about dynamics like low booming sounds (like thunder), high pitched sounds (like birds tweeting), fast paced, slow paced, loud, soft parts of the song etc.

Now, talk to your pre-schooler about how these dynamics are used in the song and how the song in turn makes her feel.

Hands On Activity

After the discussion it it is time to have a hands on activity.

Remember you don’t have to do all these activities on the same day.

Do one activity a day, over several days.

You can use the printable I have made available for this post, and ask your little one to draw a pic of her favourite song.

Voice

Now, it’s time to use her own instrument, her voice.

Ask her to sing the song, with or without the movie playing in the background.

Let her have fun and you can join in too.

Body

How about dancing, next?

With dancing she will learn beat, as she learned rhythm and melody when singing.

So join in with her and have fun.

Do you think you can do all of the above in your homeschool?

You know you can, so go ahead and watch a movie musical with your little one today.
