Today I’m going to do something very different, something that I have never done in the past. Today, I’m going to review a music course created by a good friend of mine, Gena Mayo.

Since it is the festive season and I want to add seasonal music to your home, I thought I should check out Gena’s Christmas Carols Made Easy course, and write a completely honest review about it, right here.

So What Is This Course?

Let me start off by telling you that unlike my courses, which are either courses on how to play the piano or how to appreciate music, this particular course by Gena is actually a singing course. Yes, that’s right.

Singing.

Fun don’t you think?

Wait but do I hear you saying why a singing course?

We know how to sing carols, why do we need a singing course?

I’m sure you do know how to sing. I do too. But this singing course is like no other. So please read through and you will understand why I think it is very unique.

What Is Unique About This Course?

For one, it introduces you and your entire family to singing carols from around the world. Yes, carols that are in different languages. While you may be very good at singing carols in English, do you know how to correctly pronounce and sing carols in different languages?

In this course, not only does Gena teach you how to sing carols in French, German and other languages, but she also systematically walks you through the pronunciation as well.

Furthermore, she has also provided MP3 accompaniments for each of the carols, and walks you through the difficult parts of each carol. There are even hand outs with further explanations and notes on what to look out for.

Besides having over a dozen carols, Gena has also added bonus songs. She has even included breathing and voice training exercises, and all in all, provided a ton of value that is way over and above the $25 launch price for this course.

The actual retail price of the course is $37, BUT for the duration of the launch sale (which ends on Saturday the 23rd of October), it is $25, and I can assure you that she has provided a ton of quality material.

If all of the above isn’t enough, Gena has also provided the most adorable printables so the youngest members of your household will also be able to join in the fun in their own little creative way.

Cons – Yes There Are Cons To This Course….

All you skeptics out there didn’t expect this did you?

No worries, I am a skeptic myself and totally understand if you think that my review so far has been a tad biased to the positive side.

But wait…..there is in fact a downside, and I want to point out that in my opinion this course does have a BIG downside.

So here goes…….

My pet peeve with this course is that it does not cover some of our most favourite Christmas carols like Once in Royal David’s City for instance.

But then again, I’m sure you will agree with me when I say that popular carols such as those are not very difficult to learn and sing, and even if they were challenging to the musically challenged parent, the foundation that Gena has laid in this course will no doubt help your entire family to master all the festive favourites that have not been included.

So What Is My Final Verdict?

Get the course, while you can and get it at the sale price of $25.

But wait, there is more…….

As you may have already guessed, when you purchase the course through the link I have provided on this page, I will receive an affiliate commission from Gena, and as a thank you to you for purchasing the course through MY link I want to give you access to my premium 4 unit mini course The Nutcracker Ballet, with which you can introduce your kids (aged 4 – 14) to this amazing festive ballet by Tchaikovsky.

6 ‘Unheard Of’ Ways To Blend Geography And Music Studies

6 ‘Unheard Of’ Ways To Blend Geography And Music Studies

6 ‘Unheard Of’ Ways To Blend Geography And Music Studies

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Did you know that you can combine geography and music studies in the homeschool with little or no hassle?

Surprised?

Don’t be.

In this post I am going to explain to you how you can blend in the study of music appreciation along with any aspect of geography your kids maybe learning in the homeschool.

I’m sure you are now thinking of ages and if you can blend music and geography studies with kids of any age?

Yes, you can and I am going to explain just how you can do it irrespective of the country, your child maybe learning about and irrespective of her age.

Composer Studies

This is one of the easiest things to do with kids of any age, whether they are teens or pre-schoolers.

If your children are learning about Germany for instance, ask them to research the most popular composers from a given country.

In the case of pre-schoolers you can do the research, find some printables and have them learn about one such composer, his year of birth, his most popular composition and a few other facts.

Music

Research and listen to music from the given country or region that is being studied.

If India is the country you are learning about in the homeschool this month, why not look for different genres of Indian music and compare and contrast them.

With younger kids you can just discuss how the music feels and which song, is their favourite and why?

Musical Instruments

If your kids are learning about Africa for instance, have them create a project around instruments from Africa.

On the other hand if you are learning about China or Japan, can you imagine the potential for younger and older kids alike?

Create Playlists

Research and create an entire playlist of Russian folk music for instance, (if your kids are learning about Russia or one of its regions).

With older kids you can have them research and create the playlist themselves and play the music in the background during your homeschooling hours.

This would really benefit your younger children because even though they may not be learning about the last Czar of Russia or the Russian revolution, they will still be able to hear and identify the distinct nuances of Russian folk music.

Watch Dance Performances

How about taking the above activity further and watching tradition dance performances from the country that they are learning about?

Younger kids and older kids alike will enjoy this activity immensely.

What do you think?

Watch Musical Documentaries

This one is specifically for older kids, but if you can find interesting documentaries about music from a specific country or region that will hold the attention of your primary schoolers then go for it.

So what do you think?

Are these activities doable?

Implement these ideas and let me know which one your kids enjoyed the most.

Don’t forget to download the printable I have made available with age appropriate activities for kids ranging from 4 to 17 years of age.

3 ‘Smashingly Fun’ Ways To Teach Primary Schooler Music Appreciation With Peter & The Wolf

3 ‘Smashingly Fun’ Ways To Teach Primary Schooler Music Appreciation With Peter & The Wolf

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Name me one homeschool mom that has not introduced their kids to Peter and the Wolf.

I bet you can’t, because every homeschool mom I have come across has in one way or another always introduced their kids to Peter and the Wolf.

So why am I even writing this post, then?

The reason is because even though they have introduced their kids to Peter and the Wolf, they have never really taken it further than simply listening to the composition.

Are you one of those moms?

Don’t worry, you are not alone.

I am still to come across a homeschool mom, who has been able to engage their kids further with this composition than simply listening, recognizing and identifying the different movements.

So in this post, I am going to focus specifically on primary school aged kids and how you can engage your primary schoolers and get them to appreciate music through Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.

I have also made a printable available with age appropriate activities to further your child’s learning, so don’t forget to download it, once you are done reading through this post.

Composer Study

I’m assuming that your kids have already heard the different movements in Peter and the Wolf and know the entire storyline.

If they don’t, then that is where you should start first, before implementing this idea.

With this activity you can introduce them to Sergei Prokofiev. Help them complete a short presentation or create poster board detailing his life, compositions and contribution to music.

The printables that are available with this post, will help you get started.

Music Era

Prokofiev was a composer that lived in the early modern era of music or the early 20th century when a lot of really exciting developments were taking place in music.

Ask your kids to research the modern era in music in terms of the instruments that were popularly used, the new genres of music that originated in the era and the big influencers or composers of the era.

Thereby, they will learn many fascinating facts about the modern era in music and even want to learn more in depth about a specific genre of music or instrument.

Instrument Store

Many different instruments are used in the movements in Peter and the Wolf.

Why not take your kids out on a field trip to an instrument store to familiarize them with the instruments?

They will be able to touch, feel, see and hear these instruments in person and you may come out with a youngster who wants to learn a specific instrument.

Bonus

There is nothing better than taking in a live performance.

So if you can find one in your area, then do your best to take your kids to watch a rendition of Peter and the Wolf.

When you see how much they enjoy it, you will be glad you did.

Now that you are done reading, don’t forget to download the printable.

What other ideas can you dream up to engage your kids with Peter and the Wolf?

5 ‘Super Fun’ Ways To Teach Music With Movie Musicals For 6 – 9 Year Olds

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Watching movie musicals is one of the best ways in which, you can get primary school aged kids to appreciate music in the homeschool.

Unfortunately however, most homeschool moms, have no idea how to take their 6 – 9 year olds learning to the next level.

Therefore in today’s post, I thought I should focus on that specific aspect.

Once you’ve read through this post, don’t forget to download the printables I have made available, for your primary schoolers.

Got it?

Ok, then let’s get started.

Songs

As a first step ask your kids to list out all the songs.

If possible they can download or create a playlist with the movies’ songs and listen to the songs in the background in the homeschool, until they internalize the songs.

Favourite/Least Favourite

Ask your kids to name their favourite and least favourite songs.

Next, ask them to explain why they like the song, which they named as their favourite and explain why they named the song, they named as their least favourite.

Emotions/Mood

Discuss moods, emotions and other aspects of the movie and its songs.

They can analyse each song in terms of the mood and what makes the song happy or sad?

Is it the dynamics? Is it the lyrics etc?

Instruments Used

Next, ask your kids to analyse each of the songs in terms of the instruments that have been used in the songs.

If they are up to it you can also ask them to compare and contrast each song against each other.

Composers And Singers

Now, tell them to research about the composers and singers of one or two of the selected songs.

If they choose two different songs, they can even make a presentation or lap book/flip book of each of the composers, their life and works etc.

So what do you think?

Do you think your children will really enjoy these activities?

Comment and let me know.

If you want to know, how to add movie musicals to your homeschool library, you can read my post 7 ‘Genius’ Ways To Add Musicals To Your Home Library.

8 ‘Unbelievably Innovative’ Ways To Teach Music Appreciation Through Peter & The Wolf

8 ‘Unbelievably Innovative’ Ways To Teach Music Appreciation Through Peter & The Wolf

8 ‘Unbelievably Innovative’ Ways To Teach Music Appreciation Through Peter & The Wolf

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

As many homeschool moms already know, Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev is a wonderful composition to introduce young kids to music.

However, what most don’t know is – this composition is not only meant to be studied by pre-school and primary school kids, but with the correct combination of activities, it can be used to engage and introduce older kids like tweens and teens to music as well.

So in this post, I am going to discuss eight very innovative ways in which, homeschool moms can use this freely available composition to get kids of all ages to appreciating music.

Once you are done reading this post, remember to download the worksheets I have made available, the printable includes worksheets for each age group (pre-school, primary school, middle school and high school kids).

Ready?

Let’s get started.

Compare Mood Of Movements And Learn Storyline

With younger kids you will have to relate the story to them first, if you think it’s too advanced for them.

Older kids should listen to all the movements, learn the storyline and then select two movements to compare with each other.

When comparing they can use elements such as mood, instruments used, pace etc and write a short essay.

Identify The Instruments Used

Younger kids and older kids alike can do this activity.

Try to guess the different instruments, discuss why a specific instrument is used (flute to depict joy/summer etc).

Older kids can learn about a specific instrument in depth (the family it belongs to, its origin and evolution, the part it plays in the orchestra etc).

The Composer

Again this activity can be used to engage both younger and older kids alike.

With younger kids you can just tell them that the composer was Sergei Prokofiev, he was a composer of the modern era in music etc.

On the other hand older kids can carry out a research project to learn about Prokofiev’s early childhood, musical education, compositions, contemporaries and contribution to music etc.

Research The Era In Music

Prokofiev lived in the modern era in music.

You can tell younger kids what this means (he lived in the 1900s), teach them about some of the different genres of music that originated in the modern era, and name some composers.

Older kids on the other hand can carry out research projects on all of the above – the genres in music that originated in the modern era, the famous composers of the modern era, etc.

They can also compare the modern era in music to the romantic era in music in terms of musical styles and contribution.

Instruments And Moods

In Peter and the Wolf, different instruments have been used to depict different moods, such as the bassoon to depict grandfather’s booming angry voice.

Younger kids and older kids alike can reflect on the instruments, the sounds and how those sounds portray the characters.

With older kids you can take this a step further and ask them to critically analyze, the use of different instruments in each of the movements.

Field Trip

You can take kids of all ages on a field trip as a means of engaging them further.

How about a field trip to an instrument store to actually touch, feel, see and hear the instruments used in Peter and the Wolf?

Can you think of anything more fun than that?

Visit The Zoo

Peter and the Wolf ends with the wolf being taken to the zoo in a parade.

So what better way to engage younger kids than to take them to the zoo as well?

Live Performance

If you are lucky to live in a big city like New York for instance, I’m sure you will be able to find local renditions of Peter and the Wolf and you can take your kids to watch it.

Look out for these performances even if you live a smaller city, who knows you may find one and your kids will enjoy it so much.

Can you think of more activities to engage your kids?

Which one of the above will you be using first?

4 ‘Crazy Easy’ Instrument Study Activities For Tweens

4 ‘Crazy Easy’ Instrument Study Activities For Tweens

4 ‘Crazy Easy’ Instrument Study Activities For Tweens

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Do you think that your tweens will be bored if you try to get them into music through instrument studies?

Actually, tweens are at a wonderful age, where they will benefit much from instrument studies.

In this post, I have not only provided you with four different activities that your tweens will find really engaging and thus, will open them up to a world of music, but I have also included age appropriate worksheets that will help take their learning to the next level.

So, without further ado, let’s get started.

Research

Pick an instrument of choice, like the violin or the clarinet for instance and learn about it in depth.

Learn about the instrument family it belongs to (string family in the case of the violin and woodwind family in the case of the clarinet).

Learn about the origin and the evolution of the instrument.

Learn about the role it plays in the orchestra.

Ask your tweens to use the worksheets I have included with this post, for this activity.

Create

Next, ask your tweens to create a list of famous violinists or clarinetist etc, depending on the instrument that is being studied.

Once the playlist is created, have them play it in the background during homeschooling hours for a week or more to internalize and become familiar with the sound of the instrument.

Compare

Ask your tween to compare the violin or clarinet or selected instrument with another instrument, either from the same family or a different family.

For the sake of this example, let’s say the instrument of choice is the piano, then your tween can compare it with the marimba, which is also from the percussion family, or he can compare it with the trumpet, which is from the brass family.

Your tween can take this activity a step further and even compare and contrast the songs performed on a violin with those performed on a trumpet etc.

Learn

Once all of the above is completed, it is now time for your tween to explore one of the instrument families in depth, in terms of the role the family plays in the orchestra, the different instruments that belong to the family etc.

Now, that you’ve read through the post, what do you think?

Do you think that your tween will benefit much from these activities?

More importantly do you think your tween will enjoy these activities?

Would you like to fill your homeschool with instruments? Then read my post, 9 ‘No Fail’ Ways To Fill Your Homeschool With Instruments, and learn how you can add instruments to your homeschool at a fraction of the cost.
