I have always believed and have first hand experience, that a house full of instruments often increases the chances of homeschooled kids taking an interest in music.

You see, in traditional schooling, kids are taught the basics and then explore through curiosity.

However, in my experience when I have taken the homeschooling approach to teaching, my kids start exploring simply because they are curious and then start learning the basics.

Having a house full of instruments often pushes them in this direction.

When you have a lot of musical instruments lying around the house, your child’s curiosity is naturally piqued and then he will start exploring it and want to learn the basics.

And in my opinion, this is often the best method of learning to play an instrument.

That is why I decided to write this post, to give you some tips and tricks on how you can fill your home with instruments, without spending a dime (in most cases).

Of course this is not always possible, but then again, you wouldn’t know without trying, would you?

Facebook

Yes, this is the first place I would go to, if I had to start all over again and fill my home with musical instruments.

Put it out there.

Tell your friends and family what you are hoping to do and let them know that you will gladly take any used musical instruments in good condition off of their hands, if they are willing to part with it.

Craigslist/Kijiji/Gum Tree

You may have to pay to get these used instruments, but there is no harm in in searching is there?

Who knows, you may get lucky and find someone who just wants to get rid of an instrument.

If you are willing to go pick it up, it can be yours.

Use Gift Money

If your family gives cash gifts to your kids, you might be able to use it, to buy second hand or brand new instruments.

Instruments like recorders and flutes for instance, are quite inexpensive.

My daughter uses this very inexpensive but yet high quality Yamaha recorder from Amazon.

Bartar

You might be able to barter products or even services in exchange for gently used musical instruments.

Bunz, is a phenomenal site that I know of, for bartering and I’m sure there are many more such sites out there, that can be of value to you.

Garage Sales

This is a goldmine when it comes to buying second hand items and it is no different for musical instruments.

So, don’t hesitate to pound the pavement on Saturdays, this summer.

I’m sure you will be able to find some really good deals.

Good Will and Value Village

If you have either store nearby and are willing to stop by weekly, you will surprised at the number of used musical instruments you can find there.

Remember to try out the musical instrument before purchasing.

If you donate to any of these stores often, don’t forget to use the discount vouchers they provided you for the donations.

That way you can further reduce the cost of the instruments.

Curb Side and Moving Sales

There have been many occasions on which, I have heard of people who just want to get rid of upright pianos that are in perfect condition, because they are in a hurry to move and don’t want to lug the cumbersome thing with them.

So, always keep your eyes open when driving through neighbourhoods and keep your ear to the ground so you know when a local family is moving out.

You can always check if they have any musical instruments that they are hoping to give away.

With decluttering becoming extremely popular, finding musical instruments on the curb side is not as unusual as you may think.

School Instrument Sales

At these sales you can buy, used band instruments at a heavily discounted price.

Liquidation Sales In Instrument Stores

Again, another excellent place to look for deeply discounted musical instruments.

If you are serious about adding musical instruments to your homeschool, then do your best to implement as many ideas from this post as you can.

I would love to hear, which one of these ideas worked for you and which ones didn’t, so please don’t hesitate to comment below.

My daughter loved the games, but there were also worksheets and videos. The weekly lesson plans were complete, and I never questioned what I should be doing next.

Play Piano Today!

Teach your child to play piano, today.

Yes, in as little as 30 minutes I can show you how to teach your child to play the piano, for FREE.

What are you waiting for?

This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.
