7 ‘Ultra Fun’ Composer Studies Activities For 6 – 9 Year Olds

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Do you think that your primary schoolers are too young to embark on composer studies’ work in the homeschool?

Well, I do understand your apprehension, but I’m also here to tell you that you don’t have to worry.

With the right activities, you can have them loving composer studies, and then in turn use composer studies to get them into music appreciation.

I know, your biggest question now, is what are those activities and how do you teach your kids when you don’t know the first thing about it?

Well, in this post I’m going to explain seven different activities you can do with your 6 – 9 year olds and I am even going to give you access to tools like worksheets and online courses and much more.

Excited?

Ok, let’s get started.

Composer Stories

You can get the kids started by helping them select some composers that they would like to research.

Next, help them find facts about the composer.

Your local library will be a good source for books and google is always the the ‘go to’ choice, but I prefer the old fashioned route with books.

So if you are like me and would like some recommendations on books for this activity, then please read my post, Composer Biographies For All Ages.

Notebooking Pages

There are tons of free and paid composer study related note booking pages for the 3 – 5 year cohort that you can find online.

One great source is Teachers Pay Teachers.

However, if you don’t have time to spend hours looking for printables that your kids would love, don’t worry, I have you covered.

Just download the printables I have made available with this post, and you are good to go.

Online Courses

Yes, online composer study courses are another fun way to get your primary schoolers into music.

Think they are really expensive, well they can be. But don’t worry, I have got you covered there as well.

Just click on this link and let me give you a free preview of the composer studies unit just for your little one.

Listening Activities

Now that they have done the research and have learned about the composer, it is time to ask them to create a playlist of compositions by the musician and listen to the music in the background during homeschool hours.

This will help your kids to internalize the melodies and become familiar with the composers style.

You can expand this activity further by following through to the next activity I have suggested.

Music Analysis

Tell your kids to choose two compositions from the playlist and to analyze the two by comparing and contrasting them for the instruments used, the mood, the tempo, pitch, volume etc.

Want more ideas on how to help your primary schoolers analyse music? Then read my post, 3 ‘Must Teach’ Music Analysis Activities For Primary Students.

Hands On Activities

Once your kids have read books and done the necessary research on the life and works of the composer (facts about composers like the birth country, year of birth, famous composition, age the composer lived in etc), you can move on to more hands on activities.

For starters you can help them create a lap book or a scrap book with pictures from the composers country, the instruments the composer played, pictures of the composer etc.

What do you think?

Field Activities

Finally, how about some field activities?

Take your kids to an instrument store where he can touch and feel an instrument that the composer played.

How about going to a music show that features compositions of the composer?

Other activities would be going to the museum to experience what life would have been like during the age in which the composer lived.

Going to a local cultural centre to learn more about life in the composers country etc.

What other field activities can you think of.

Now over to you.

Let me know what other activities you can add over and above the ones I have suggested here.

3 ‘Incredibly Easy’ Ways To Teach Your Kids About Different Genres Of Music

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Teaching kids about the different genres of music, the different nuances that are prevalent in these genres and more, can be both very interesting and also very engaging.

It is also one of the best and easiest ways for homeschool moms with absolutely no knowledge of music, to get their kids into music.

So, in today’s post I will be explaining how you can use three incredibly easy techniques to do just that.

As always I have also included a printable to go with this post, so don’t forget to download it once you are done reading.

Learn

Irrespective of the age of your child, select a few genres like Jazz, Blues, Rock and help him identify the different genres.

Listen

Next create playlists for each genres and have your child listen to the music

Delve

Depending on the age of your child you can vary the activities.

With really young kids, learning about one musician, or the name of one famous musician who excelled in a specific genre and learning his name etc, would be sufficient. Eg. Pop music – Elvis Presley, learn where he was born and a few of his songs.

With older kids you can take these activities even further.

Learn about the history of the genre, what inspired it, who were the most popular artists, create and listen to playlists for each artist, learn about the musical instruments mostly used for the genre, compare and contrast the music of different artists, reflect on the genres of music, the emotions they elicit and much more.

You can even take these a further step by organizing field trips to local music festivals and performances, where your children can experience the music they are learning about, in person.

What do you think of these activities?

Aren’t they easy to implement?

Which one will you be implementing first in your homeschool?

6 ‘Unbelievably Fun’ Ways To Introduce Pre-Schoolers To The Carnival Of The Animals

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Have you heard of the Carnival of the Animals?

Do you like it?

Have you introduced it to your kids?

I’m sure there’s not a single homeschooling parent who hasn’t heard of the Carnival of the Animals, or hasn’t had their pre-schooler listen to the Carnival of the Animals.

While many homeschool moms do introduce the Carnival of the Animals to their young kids, unfortunately I’ve found that not many of them know how to engage their kids with activities designed around it.

Thus they lose out on this amazing opportunity to introduce their kids to music appreciation in a serious manner.

So in this post I will be covering how you as a homeschool parent can do exactly this with your pre-schoolers.

Also I have included an adorable printable with four worksheets covering the first movement in the Carnival of the Animals, which you can use with your pre-schoolers.

So don’t forget to download it once you are done reading through this post.

Create A Playlist And Listen

This is the first and easiest thing to do.

Create a playlist consisting of all the movements and play it continuously in the background in your homeschool.

This way kids will automatically become accustomed to the different movements.

Learn Composer Facts

Find some key facts about Camille Saint Saens like his country of birth (France), the era of music he belonged to (the romantic era), his other compositions and introduce him to your kids in the form of a story.

Don’t know how to create a composer study unit for pre-schoolers?

No worries.

Read my post 6 ’Shockingly Fun’ Composer Studies Activities For Pre-Schoolers.

Learning About the Instruments

Different instruments are used in different movements.

So this would be a really good time for you to introduce your kids several different instruments of the orchestra.

Don’t know where to start?

No worries. Just read through my post 5 ‘Ridiculously Simple’ Instrument Study Activities For Your Preschoolers.

Discuss The Movement, The Instruments And The Animals Featured

Each movement represents a different animal and you can just ask your pre-schooler what his favourite movement is, and also inform him of which movement represents, which animals.

You can take the discussion further and ask him how each movement makes him feel and what he thinks of the instrument sounds he hears.

Eg. Do they make him feel scared/happy/sad etc?

Make A Craft

You can help your child make a craft of the animal depicted in his favourite movement.

Well you can actually take this further and do a different craft on different days by listening to different movements on each day.

Field Trip

How about a field trip to the local instrument store?

Your pre-schooler can actually touch and feel some of the instruments he heard in his favourite movement and maybe if one of the staff knows how to play, he might even see a live performance.

Can you think of anything more fun?

Which one of the above activities will you try out first?

Please comment below, I would love to know.

Don’t forget to download the adorable printables I created to go with this post.

4 ‘Ingenius’ Ways To Teach Tweens Music With Movie Musicals

4 ‘Ingenius’ Ways To Teach Tweens Music With Movie Musicals

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Watching movie musicals is one of the best ways in which, you can get middle school aged kids to appreciate music in the homeschool.

Unfortunately however, most homeschool moms, have no idea how to take their 10 -13 year old’s learning to the next level.

Therefore, in today’s post, I thought I should focus on that specific aspect.

Once you’ve read through this post, don’t forget to download the worksheets I have made available, for your tween.

Ready to get started?

Let’s go.

Songs, Composers And Instruments

As a first step ask your tweens to list out all the songs in the movie

If possible they can download or create a playlist with the movies’ songs and listen to the songs in the background in the homeschool, until they internalize the songs.

List out the composers and instruments in each song.

They can take it a step further and compare and contrast two songs on style and how it sounds etc.

Different Versions Of The Song

Ask your kids to use the list that was created above and search and listen to different versions of each of the songs.

For instance, some songs may have cover versions, remakes and much more.

Compare and Contrast

Again, use the list provided above and pick two or more songs.

Now tell your tweens to compare and contrast the songs in terms of emotions and moods that it elicits, and discuss why the song is melancholy, happy or cheerful etc.

Remember, to discuss aspects such as dynamics and instruments used.

Favourite Song

Lastly, tell your tweens to select a favourite song from the list and carry out an in-depth analysis of the song in terms of dynamics, emotions, lyrics, melody, beat, etc.

Do you think your tweens will enjoy these activities?

Don’t forget to download the worksheets I have made available for them.

If you want to know, how to add movie musicals to your homeschool library, you can read my post 7 ‘Genius’ Ways To Add Musicals To Your Home Library.

My post, How To Have A Musical Movie Night, will help you make watching movie musicals a fun and enjoyable experience in your homeschool.

3 ‘Must Teach’ Music Analysis Activities For Primary Students

3 ‘Must Teach’ Music Analysis Activities For Primary Students

3 ‘Must Teach’ Music Analysis Activities For Primary Students

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

Do you think music analysis is only for advanced students of music?

No, actually it isn’t.

If you’ve been told that only kids learning music at a really high level need to and can analyse music, then you have been buying into a false myth.

Kids of any age can learn to analyse music and actually it is one of the best ways to get them interested in music.

In this post, I am going to give you a detailed explanation of how you can teach your primary school aged kids to analyse music in the comfort of your home.

And no, you don’t need any prior knowledge nor formal training in music, because I am going to give you all the steps and all the tools you need and it is going to be as easy as one, two, three.

As always, I have also made a printable available with this post, so don’t forget to download it once you are done reading the post.

Ok, so without further ado, let’s get started.

Listen To Dynamics

Now, don’t get worried when you see the word ‘terminology’.

I’m going to teach you three simple music terms for you to introduce to your homeschoolers and you will see how those three terms can open up a world of musical learning in no time.

So what are these three magical words?

Ready to hear them?

Ok, here goes.

Volume – Is the music loud or soft?

Pitch – Is the music high or low?

Pace – Is the music fast or slow?

That’s it?

What do you think?

Now, let’s move to the next step.

After you have introduced the musical terms to your children, it is now time to listen to a piece of music and ask her about the dynamics.

Is the piece loud or soft? Are the notes high or low? Is it fast paced or slow paced?

Of course, you might have to guide her through the first song or two, but you will see that she understands pretty quickly and is able to accurately analyse each piece.

Reflect

Like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it is the same with music as well.

So now it is time to reflect on the compositions.

Ask simple questions like

Do you like the song?

How does the song make you feel?

Why don’t you like the song?

Why do you think the song is scary? etc, will help her to reflect on each song.

Instruments

Once she has accurately reflected on the song, you can go a step further and ask her to try to recognize the different instruments in the song.

Identifying instruments like drums will be easier than figuring out if a cornet or a trumpet is being played.

Watching music videos and getting accustomed to the sound of instruments will also help in this stage.

Besides, trying to identify the instruments alone it will also be good for your child to reflect on how the instruments contribute to the overall tone of the piece and the emotions it elicits.

Compare And Contrast

Once she has listened and analysed a few pieces of music, it is time to compare and contrast two pieces in terms of the dynamics (volume, pitch and pace), the moods, the instruments used and how the instruments in each melody change the mood etc.

What do you think? Will you primary school aged homeschooler be unto this?

Comment below and let me know how it went.

6 ‘Extraordinarily Engaging’ Ways To Teach Tweens The History Of Music

6 ‘Extraordinarily Engaging’ Ways To Teach Tweens The History Of Music

6 ‘Extraordinarily Engaging’ Ways To Teach Tweens The History Of Music

See below for a Free Printable Pack to go with the post.

The history of music is a really engaging way in which to bring music lessons to the middle school aged kids in your homeschool.

Read through this post and download the worksheets I have made available so you can introduce your kids to music appreciation in a very fun and engaging way.

Create A Playlist

Yes, this is one of the easiest things to do and one that your tweens will likely love.

Select a specific era in music to focus on, then tell your tweens to create a playlist of music from that particular era in music.

Next, listen to the playlist everyday for the next week or two during your usual homeschooling day.

Composer And Instrument Studies

Your tweens can use the playlist that they created and research about the different composers whose music they were listening to and the instruments that were used in the compositions.

Learn about the life and works of the composers, the origins and evolution of the instruments and much more.

Create A Presentation

Research and create a presentation depicting life during the selected era.

Your tweens can cover aspects such as food, transportation, political events, clothing, social structures, political structure, architecture and much more.

Can you see, how you can start with music but expand it further?

Field Trips

Why not include some field trips and similar activities like going to the museum to learn more about the era, going to live performances of plays that were set in the era and more?

Can you think of other field trip ideas?

Please comment below.

History, And The Evolution Of Music As We Know It

You can take the presentation your tweens created about the selected era to a different level and ask them to research how major historic events in the given era influenced the music of the era and who the prominent musicians were and what inspired them.

Compose

How about asking your tweens to pretend to be composers and compose simple melodies that are in keeping with the style of music of the era?

There is no right or wrong way to do this, just have them listen to music from the era and ask them to try to improvise similar melodies and rhythms.

Do you think your tweens will like these ideas?

Comment below and let me know.
