The Number ONE Thing You Should Pay Attention To When Teaching Your Child Music In The Homeschool
With a myriad of different teaching methodologies, and ways in which you can enrich your child’s learning in the homeschool, it is very easy to pick things that don’t work out as promised and then get frustrated.
This is no different when it comes to teaching music in the homeschool or any other subject. Even though my children are not homeschooled, I use a lot of homeschooling materials to enrich their education in a variety of different ways, and have had the same experience.
So, not only have I been frustrated when I have been left with material that I bought after tons of hours of research and after putting in serious thought, but…..
I have also read about tons of mothers who have simply been overwhelmed by the choice out there.
Other moms I know, have picked out amazing material that have ‘unbelievably’ good reviews only to find that it doesn’t work for their kids.
Still others I know, have tried again and again to use expensive material, as well as free material to engage their kids but to no avail.
The sad part about all these stories and my story as well, is that all these moms (myself included) had the best intensions.
We also sacrificed a lot in the hope of making a difference for our kids’ education but ended up doing the exact opposite, and when things didn’t work out as they should have, we blamed ourselves, gave up, thinking that we are no good at homeschooling and took ourselves out of the equation when educating our kids.
Have you experienced this?
Did you blame yourself?
If you did. that is normal, but I’m here to say that NO, you are not to blame.
No product ever meets the needs of 100% of the audience it is meant for.
Not even when we’ve spent hours researching and checking out reviews and recommendations, not even when they come from our ultra favourite homeschool mom blogger.
Why is that?
Because at the end of the day each of us and our kids are unique and even though our kids may be like other kids in many ways, in still other ways they simply are not.
So, then what is the ONE most important thing you should pay attention to when picking out material for your homeschool?
Yes, I think you get it now.
It is your child, his interests, his abilities, his learning style and what his little quirks are.
Does this mean that knowing all this will enable you to buy the products that fit his needs perfectly?
No, it doesn’t.
All it means is that by knowing your child in the way that I have listed above, you will be better able to narrow down the search.
But things don’t stop there.
Rather, that is still the midway point and now starts the difficult aspects.
Because you know your child best you should now take the material that you buy and tailor make it to fit his specific needs.
Think you can do that?
It will no doubt be very hard at first (trust me I’ve been doing this for a long time, and still find it hard at times), but with practice you will be able to do it (just like I am doing it) and feel more confident over time.
So what do you think? Is this doable?

My daughter loved the games, but there were also worksheets and videos. The weekly lesson plans were complete, and I never questioned what I should be doing next.
This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.
