In my opinion, Christmas is the best time of the year to introduce kids of any age to music appreciation.
But with tweens when compared to other age groups, I believe that Christmas provides immense opportunities for learning music and therefore, it is a season that should not be missed.
So, today I am going to share eight really fun festive music appreciation activities for tweens. Some of these activities can be used with teens and kids that are not yet tweens, as well.
What is more? I have also included a printable that your tweens will love.
Let’s get started.
Live Performances
There are so many different live musical performances around the Christmas season it is hard not to do this activity.
So think ahead, look for something that is budget friendly and something that your tweens will enjoy and let them experience music in person.
Go Carolling
Yes, it is as simple as that.
Get a group together, remember to stay safe. and spread some Christmas cheer.
You can even do this virtually.
Researching And Comparing Carols
Pick two carols to research and compare.
Compare the tunes, the composers, the origins of the carols, the instruments played, the era in which it was composed and much more.
Don’t know exactly how to get started with this?
No worries.
Just use the printable I have included.
Learning About The Origin And Evolution Of Carols
If the previous idea seemed too overwhelming, no worries, let’s take it one step at a time.
Start by selecting just one carol and researching its origin and evolution through the years.
Again, you can use the printable I have included and your tweens can learn about the beautiful carol While Shepherds Watched Their Flock By Night, in depth.
Carols From Different Cultures And Their Christmas Traditions
Yes, learn about carols from a variety of different cultures and Christmas traditions from those countries. My course Carolling Around The World, covers this in depth and you can preview one online unit by clicking here.
Compose Your Own Christmas Carols
What can be more fun than writing your own lyrics to a Christmas carol and putting music to it?
Your tween doesn’t need to know to play an instrument, just add a beat and he/she can use some online tools like Garage Band for instance to help create a rhythm.
Watch And Analyse A Christmas Ballet
Yes, watch and analyse a movie musical or a Christmas Ballet like the Nutcracker for instance.
Want to learn more about the Nutcracker? Check out my online music appreciation course The Nutcracker, you can preview it here.
So what do you think?
Which one of the above ideas are you going to implement first?
