I’m sure you love Christmas as much as I do.
In our home the Christmas spirit can be felt from October. However, while I would love to start decorating the house come October, I don’t do that.
The main reason for that is because, I don’t want the kids to miss out on halloween and for another reason is, I also want them to understand and really reflect on the significance of Remembrance Day.
So I wait until after Remembrance Day to decorate the interior and exterior of the house. But, when they were little and even to date, I still continue to include Christmas related material in their music, art and literature studies.
And in this post I will share seven such ideas so you can get started as well.
Listen To Carols
The first and the easiest strategy to include music in the homeschool as you know is to listen to music in the background.
So create a playlist, pull out a CD or simply use an online radio station that specializes in Christmas music and listen to it in the background through the day.
Now, if it was up to me, I would try to stick to the traditional tunes and traditional carols, but it is totally up to you, so create a list of your choice.
Learn The History Of the Carols
Can you think of anything better than learning about some of our most beloved carols?
Well, I can’t.
That is why I actually have a course called ‘Carolling’ Around The World, where I teach kids 4 – 14 about 12 of our most beloved Christmas Carols, their histories, the composers, the country the carol originated in and also the Christmas traditions in that specific country.
Would you like to try out the mini version of the course?
The premium version covers 12 carols, but you can access the mini version today for a very limited time and with it your children will learn about 2 carols.
Just click this link to access the mini course.
You can also use the lyrics, I have included to sing the carols.
The Family Sing-A-Long
One of my fondest memories of Christmas is gathering around the piano at home, with my mom and dad and grand parents and any aunts, uncles, and cousins present, and singing our hearts out.
Can you think of anything more heart warming than that?
Well, why don’t you plan to have a family sing-a-long every Sunday during Advent this year?
If you don’t have a piano or other instrument, no worries. Just sing unaccompanied, if you have good singers in the family, if not look up some karaoke lists on YouTube and use it.
Go Carolling
If you live in a lovely close knit community, or if you know your neighbours very well, you and your kids can go carolling this season.
Imagine the fun you will have practicing and the joy you will be spreading around.
Watch The Nutcracker
This is another one of my favourite Christmas traditions (and I have a lot).
If you can take in a live performance then do so, otherwise you can watch the Disney animated movie.
Why not study this amazing Tchaikovsky masterpiece?
Want help?
For a very limited time, I’m giving you a preview of my premium course The Nutcracker, you can access it here, download all the printables by signing up below, watch the videos and learn to appreciate it like never before.
Watch A Live Performance
Does your church put on a live performance of Carols or the nativity scene?
Many communities have a variety of performances around the Christmas theme.
So look out for one or more in your community and go watch it.
Watch A Christmas Musical
Yes, again you can go to a live performance like the Nutcracker, but don’t stop there.
Why not have a weekly Christmas Movie Musical night?
Yes, that’s really a thing.
Bring out the popcorn, gather the family and watch one Christmas themed movie musical a week. Here are some of my favourite Christmas Musicals
– The Muppets Christmas Carol
– Rent
– Scrooge
– A Christmas Carol
– The Polar Express
– A White Christmas

My daughter loved the games, but there were also worksheets and videos. The weekly lesson plans were complete, and I never questioned what I should be doing next.
This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.
