8 ‘Creative’ Ways To Give Your Child An Opportunity To Play Piano In Public

As an online music educator, I know that one of the biggest drawbacks of learning piano online is the inability to take part in a year end piano recital.

So I thought that I should write a post on how you can make it happen for your child and give him the full experience just like as if he would have had, if he learned piano at a piano studio.

Before I start listing out the different methods, I want you to know that even though, this post is geared specifically to enable you to find avenues for your child to have a piano recital or perform publicly, many of these ideas will work with any other instrument like a guitar, recorder or violin etc.

Ok, now let’s get started.

The Church Group

Many church groups that I know of, love to encourage the musical abilities of their young followers.

As a result they are very open to the idea of having recitals and performances that can showcase the wonderful God given talents of their parishioners.

If you are a member of a church, don’t hesitate to approach the music director or the social secretary and ask them if they would like to put up such a show.

I’m sure if you willingly volunteer to put it together, they would be willing to give you space and even help promote the event and have other young worshipers join in as well.

Homeschool Co-op

If you are a part of a homeschool co-op and there is a music program with a year end recital, then you can ask to include your child as well.

If your co-op doesn’t have such an event, again, why not organize such an event. You can be sure that your child will not be the only child learning an instrument and therefore there will be much enthusiasm for it.

At Home Recitals

I have often advocated for at home recitals, which can be really fun and bring the entire extended family and circle of friends together.

Want to know how to put together a ‘at home recital’? Read my post on How To Have A Recital At Home, and start organizing one right now.

Skype/Facetime/FB Live

Do you live in a remote area or in another country, far from your family and friends and are unable to organize a recital where your family and friends can attend in person?

Not to worry, with platforms like Skype and FaceTime and FB Live, you can schedule a performance and invite all your friends and family to attend.

By doing it live, it will still have close to the same effect.

Neighbourhood Recital

Do you have a fantastic bunch of neighbours?

Then why not ask around and organize a recital, so all the neighbourhood kids can showcase their talents in music and drama?

Organizing it will be much like organizing one at home, except that now you will need a bigger venue and may need to book a community centre hall or look for space at a local church or somewhere similar.

Public Concerts

Small and big communities alike often have public concerts where anyone can apply to showcase their talents.

Of course there will always be a criteria that will be specific to the concert that your child will have to fulfill in order to be qualified.

Look out for such concerts and apply if you think your child will qualify.

Birthday Parties

Yes, birthday parties and other events that bring the family together are also lovely places to have a planned or impromptu recital.

Last year, I hosted Christmas at my place for my family and some friends, and my friends’ 6 year old daughter simply walked up to me and asked if she could sing Silent Night to the whole group.

So cute, don’t you think?

I could never say, No, to such a request and she was phenomenal at singing (which I didn’t actually know, when she made the request).

Even if she was less than perfect, there’s no way we would have said anything bad, rather we would have cheered her on for being so brave and doing such a fantastic job.

If you know the people at the party well and know that they will be very supportive of your child, then don’t hesitate, have him perform at the party.

The experience can be priceless for him.

YouTube/Instagram Stories

This is not really a recital because it falls more in line with a pre-recorded video of your child performing, but in the absence of any of the opportunities stated above, it is still better than nothing. don’t you think?

Play Piano Today!

Teach your child to play piano, today.

Yes, in as little as 30 minutes I can show you how to teach your child to play the piano, for FREE.

What are you waiting for?

This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.
