Did you know that one of the best ways to add music to your homeschool is to watch musicals on a regular basis?
Now, if you can take in a live performance of the Lion King, or Hairspray or any other musical that is available in your city, that would be simply amazing.
But, who are we kidding?
Live performances can be very expensive and when we talk about a large family going together on a regular basis to the theatre, the costs can be astronomical.
So instead, I suggest that you should try to have a Musical Movie Night once a month or so at home.
Bring out the popcorn and delicious snacks and make it a really fancy night at home.
Also if you would like to get the most of these movie nights, then download my printable use it, before, during and after the movie.
Without further ado, let me give you a list of the 7 Musicals I think you ‘Must See’.
The Sound Of Music
Based loosely on the true story of the Von Trapp family; not only will this movie introduce your kids to the amazing singing prowess of Julie Andrews, but it will also teach them about love and family and give them some context about life in Austria at the start of WWII.
Not only will the movie give you the opportunity to introduce music to your kids, but you can blend musical learning with history lessons. Don’t know how to do that? Then you will love my post 5 ‘Innovative’ Ways To Blend Music With Other Subjects Learned In The Homeschool.
My Fair Lady
Based on the story by George Bernard Shaw, this movie will teach kids about how hard work finally pays off and will always triumph.
The Singing Nun
I’m sure you will not be able to help but fall in love with this ‘scooter riding nun’ and the little boy Dominic.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
This will no doubt be a big hit among the younger kids, who will no doubt love the idea about a flying/floating car, a candy factory, a toy maker and an evil child catcher.
Mary Poppins
Make sure you watch the 1960s edition with Julie Andrews as I believe it to be the best. The tunes are very catchy and really, I can’t get enough of Julie Andrews ever.
Grease
A movie about young love and heartbreak in the 1970’s
Mama Mia
Love ABBA? Then this is definitely a treat for everyone. I always love how they managed to weave all of ABBA’s most popular songs into the storyline so skillfully.
Ok. So now that you have the list, which one will you watch this weekend?
Don’t have the budget to buy any of these movies?

My daughter loved the games, but there were also worksheets and videos. The weekly lesson plans were complete, and I never questioned what I should be doing next.
This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.
