Watching movie musicals is one of the best ways in which, you can get high school aged kids to appreciate music in the homeschool.

Unfortunately however, most homeschool moms, have no idea how to take their teenagers’ learning to the next level.

Therefore, in today’s post, I thought I should focus on that specific aspect.

Once you’ve read through this post, don’t forget to download the worksheets I have made available, for your teen.

Ready to get started?

Let’s go.

Create A Playlist

As a first step ask your teens to create a playlist with the movies’ songs and listen to the songs in the background in the homeschool, until they internalize the songs.

Next, ask your teens to use the list that was created above and search and listen to different versions of each of the songs and create a playlist with the different versions.

For instance, some songs may have cover versions, remakes and much more.

Compare and Contrast

Use the playlists to select two or more songs from the original movie sound tracks and compare and contrast the songs in terms of their tempo, pitch, rhythm and emotions.

Use the worksheets that I have made available with this post, for this exercise.

Favourite Song

Ask your teen to name his favourite song from the movie and discuss it in detail and discuss, why he likes it over the other songs.

Least Favourite Song

Now, ask him to select his least favourite song and again discuss in detail why he dislikes it when compared to the rest.

Remember, to use music elements such as tempo, pitch, rhythm, beat, instruments etc, when analysing.

Research

As a final step, ask your teen to research the life and works of one of the composers or singers or group/band of the song and write an essay.

Do you think these activities will be enjoyable for your teen?

Don’t forget to download the worksheets I have made available for them.
