When I talk about blending history and music, most homeschool moms only think of older kids. They often don’t believe that younger kids can be taught history even though they maybe already learning music.
So in this post I am going to show you how you can teach history and music together to your pre-schooler and make it really fun.
I have even included adorable worksheets you can use to take your kids learning to the next level.
Listen
This would be my very first foray into history and music with pre-schoolers
Let’s say for instance you think that the middle ages with its knights in shining armour and castles etc, would be an interesting time for your little one.
Then why not look for short clips of music from the medieval era and play it in the background for your kids to get accustomed to how it sounds?
You can do this with any era in music
Watch
If your little ones are fans of Mike the Knight, you can talk to them about life during medieval times and how it was.
Now they can make the connection between life and the music (remember to tell them that the theme song for Mike the Knight, is a modern composition).
If you have something similar to Medieval Times dinner and show in your area that is age appropriate for your little one, why not take in a show?
A visit to the museum might also be a good idea, don’t you think?
Instrument Study
Teach your little one about an instrument like a sackbut, which originated during medieval times.
You can even download some music played on a sackbut and even show them videos of performers.
Composer Study
Select a composer like Hildegard of Bingen for instance and relate her life story and some important facts about the composer, to your child.
You can take it a step further and teach your child about the house the composer may have lived in during that time, the type of clothes she may have worn, the type of transportation that might have been available to her, and the type of food that she may have eaten.
Yes, even though those aspects have nothing to do with music, do you see how the study of music and history have been blended seamlessly together in a really fun way?
Take An Online Course
Want to take your child’s learning even further?
Why not register for my online course the History Of Music and have your child learn all about the different eras in music.
Not only will your pre-schooler have tons of fun, since the course is created with age appropriate activities for kids from 4 – 17, you can use it with all your kids.
If you only have this one child, your little one can continue to return to the course year over year (as you own the course for life) and learn the history of music at several different stages (as a 6 – 9 year old, as a tween and then again as a teen).
So what do you think?
Which one of the above activities will you be doing fist with your little one?

My daughter loved the games, but there were also worksheets and videos. The weekly lesson plans were complete, and I never questioned what I should be doing next.
