Do you know that teens, irrespective of whether they have any formal training in music or not can still analyse music?
I can see the surprise in your face.
Yes, even teens who have never had any formal lessons can analyse music.
So whether your teenagers have been exposed to music lessons in the homeschool or not, you can use the ideas in this post, and have them analysing music and really enjoying it.
Once you’ve read through this post, remember to download and use the worksheets I have made available so they can get down to it immediately.
So here goes.
Dynamics, Mood And Harmonization
An area that they can easily analyse at this stage is the dynamics in the melodies and how it contributes to the mood of each tune.
If they have not been introduced to terms such as volume, pace and pitch, this would be a good time to do so.
Now take it a step further and ask them to analyze how the dynamics contribute to the mood and the harmonization of the melody.
Instrument Identification
While listening to songs, they can also try to distinguish the different instruments used and how those instruments contribute to the melodies.
Your teens can also take this opportunity to draw conclusions on what they think works and doesn’t work and why it is so.
There are no right or wrong answers here, it is more about exploring rhythms and drawing conclusions based on personal taste.
Compare And Contrast
Now it is time to analyse each piece of music in depth in terms of all the different elements that have been suggested above.
Just select two songs , either by the same composer or different composers and ask your teens to compare and contrast the two.
Reflections
While this may sound similar to what has already been covered, it is essential to remember that reflections can go further in terms of your tween drawing conclusions on what she liked or didn’t like, why and how the melodies made her feel personally.
Changes To Be Made And Why?
Finally once all of the above has been completed, it is time for your teen be a composer and decide on what changes if any she would make to the compositions and why?
Again, this does not have to be technically accurate at this point but rather based on personal preference.
Now that you’ve read through the post, what do you think?
Can your teen analyse music?
I’m sure she can, so go try it out and use the worksheets I have made available.

This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.
