Did you know that one of the easiest ways to introduce young children to music, is to introduce them to a variety of genres of music?
As you know, through the ages there have been tons of different genres of music such as baroque, classical, jazz, pop, rock, blues, rap and much more.
So why not simply start by selecting a few genres and introducing them to your little one.
Don’t know where to start and what to do?
No worries. In this post, I will explain the exact steps you can implement to introduce your child to different genres of music in the comfort of your homeschool.
Don’t forget to download the printable I have made available with the age appropriate activities.
Ready?
Without further ado, let’s get started.
Introduce
The first step is to introduce your little one to several different genres of music by name.
For this, try to stick to genres you think he may already have been exposed to.
If you listen to music of the great composers like Mozart, Beethoven and Vivaldi, make sure to tell him that the music he is listening to is categorized into a genre called Classical Music.
Likewise, introduce him to a few other genres as well.
Select
Now that he knows the name of a few genres of music, select just one genre to focus on for a month or more.
Once you’ve selected the genre, create an entire playlist of the genre.
Make sure they are songs of artists that you think your child will like.
Also make sure that the music is something you enjoy, because you will have to listen to this music playing in the background of your homeschool for days to come.
Listen
Yes, now you play the music and let your child listen to the entire playlist, for a few days.
Once you think your child is familiar with the songs, you can start discussing the music.
Discuss
Ask him which tunes he likes the most, and which ones he’s not very impressed with?
Go a step further and try to probe why he likes one song over the other. Is it the tune, or the instrument?
Have him listen to the songs he dislikes but this time, let him hear a different version by a different artist or with different instruments and then ask him his opinion
You can discuss aspects such as, how the music makes you feel? Is the volume loud or soft? Is the tune fast or slow etc?
As you can now understand, not only has your little one become familiar and is able to recognize a genre of music, but he has learned music appreciation as well as how to analyse a piece of music.
Don’t you think that is wonderful?
