Have you ever thought of blending two subjects in your homeschool?
Whether you have or haven’t, music is a very versatile subject that can be blended with a variety of other subjects like Math, Science, History and even Geography.
Yes, even geography.
Read on and let me explain how you can blend music and geography in the homeschool and make it really interesting for your primary school aged kids.
What is more?
I have even created a wonderful bundle of worksheets you can use to take your child’s learning to the next level.
So don’t forget to download it.
For the ease of this post, and to be able to illustrate the suggested activities with real examples, I’m going to assume that your kids are currently learning about China in the homeschool.
Chinese Musical Instruments
This is often the easiest and most interesting activity in my opinion.
Get your kids started off researching the different Chinese musical instruments, their origins, evolution and the different musicians who composed especially for those instruments.
Look out for cultural events in your city where you might be able to see a live performance with the same instruments.
Chinese Music
You can ask your kids to take the previous activity a step further and find and create a playlist of music performed with the Chinese instruments they learned about.
Play the music in the background.
This same activity, can also be taken further with the next activity.
Chinese Composers
Research and learn about different composers from China.
Create a playlist of their songs, learn about the composer’s life and work, education and contribution to music.
Create a presentation or a poster board or lap book with the knowledge gained.
Music From Different Regions Of China
China is a huge country, just like India, or Australia or the United States and many other countries.
Therefore, it is likely that different regions of the country were catalyst in the creation of specific genres or styles of music, so why not learn about two such types, create a playlist, figure out the instruments played, the composers who were very popular in those genres and write a short essay comparing the two?
What do you think?
Woudn’t your kids fund these activities truly fun?
Comment below and let me know.
