One of the best ways to introduce kids to music in the homeschool is to always blend music in with other subjects that you teach.

This way not only don’t you have to make extra time for music lessons but you can make music lessons extra interesting and have them learn some really cool aspects and elements of music that otherwise may not be possible.

So in today’s post, I’m going to explain to you how you can blend history with music appreciation in your homeschool.

The activities in this post will be focused for the 6 – 9 age group or primary school aged kids.

Also, as always I have made printables available so you can take your kids learning to the next level.

The printables can be used irrespective of what political events, wars, revolutions, etc your kids are learning in homeschool history.

However, for the ease of this post I’m going to choose the middle ages so I can easily explain and give you examples of what and how you can design the activities.

I hope that made sense.

The middle ages in history is often referred to as medieval times in music and covers the era before 1350.

Composer Studies

One great activity would be to learn about composers who lived during the time or the event that is being studied.

In this case, learning about Hildegard of Bingen, Guillaume DuFay and others would be great.

You can ask your kids to research and create a lap book about one composer from the medieval era in music.

Easy isn’t it?

Listen

Another great activity would be to research and create a playlist of music from the medieval era in music and have it playing in the background, while your kids are actually learning about the middle ages in the history.

Just imagine, how cool would that be?

One warning here though, medieval music mostly consisted of worship songs and Gregorian chants and some of you may not enjoy them very much.

Who are we kidding? Even I find them very tedious to listen to.

But, you never know, your kids may like them or they may not, you wouldn’t know until you try it out.

Either way, if your kids are learning about the middle ages, then listening to music from the era. The best thing to do is to just warn them ahead of time and play snippets rather than long renditions of the songs, first.

If they like it you can play the longer renditions and if they don’t like it, at least they got a taste of it.

Instrument Study

During the medieval era in music, several different instruments that are not even in existence were used.

Therefore, it would be great for your kids to research the different instruments of the era like the sackbut for instance and compare and contrast it with musical instruments from the modern era (ones that are available today).

Play Piano Today!

Teach your child to play piano, today.

Yes, in as little as 30 minutes I can show you how to teach your child to play the piano, for FREE.

What are you waiting for?

This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.
