Since I’ve been harping for a while on how watching movie musicals can be a ’super simple’ way of adding music to your homeschool, I thought what better time than right now, to give you a list of musicals that tweens in your household should watch.

I am listing 12 musicals here, because I thought that it is a nice number that will enable you to watch at least one per month and take you through a whole year, or one per week and take your kids through three months of musical learning.

Furthermore, I have even included printables to enable your tweens to make the most of the movie musicals they watch and use it to up level their music appreciation skills.

Guys & Dolls – This is a romantic comedy, centred around very unlikely pairings.

Bye Bye Birdie – Your kids will no doubt fall in love with the charming teen girl around who this entire story revolves.

Newsies – This musical was inspired by a true story of newspaper boys, unionizing and striking against a greedy publisher.

The Sound of Music – So iconic and beloved, where do I start? Not only will this movie leave you all singing the many catchy tunes, but it will also teach your kids about the events surrounding WWII. So what better way to blend the teaching of music and history?

My Fair Lady – No matter how old you are, you simply cannot not love Audrey Hepburn. This movie based on the book Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw, will have your entire family singing and dancing all night.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – Who can resist a movie about an eccentric, inventor father, a flying car, a candy factory and a child catcher? It definitely won’t be your tweens, once they watch this lovable musical, from their grandparents’ era.

Mary Poppins – While there is a newer version of this musical, I love the 1960s edition with Julie Andrews.

The Singing Nun – Who cannot, not love this scooter riding nun and the adorable little boy Dominic? Watch your kids be mesmerized by this epic musical.

Fiddler on the Roof – This is a heart warming story of a Jewish father trying to find good husbands for his daughters, in the midst of growing anti-Semitism. A ‘must see’, movie that can also teach your kids much about the Progroms in Russia.

West Side Story – This modern day Romeo and Juliet story, will be a definite hit with your kids for sure, and therefore, a ‘must not be missed’ movie.

Gigi – This romantic story set at the turn of the century about a girl coming of age, will simply warm your hearts and you’ll no doubt be ‘thanking heaven for little girls’.

Carousal – This heavenly love story is a ‘must not be missed’.

If you can’t find these movies on Netflix, or would like to build your own library of Musicals, then my post 7 ‘Unbelievable’ Ways To Add Musicals To My Homeschool, will definitely help.

Want to take your kids’ learning to the next level? Then download these printables and help them learn to appreciate music through these musicals.
