Musicals are one of the best ways to introduce music to your homeschool.
Unfortunately however, most homeschooling parents are unaware of how to make the most of this fun activity.
For one thing, they often end up selecting musicals that are not very interesting for their kids, and even when the pick the most age appropriate musical, they are unaware of how best to use the musical to further, their children’s ability to appreciate music.
If you are one those parents, then I think you are going to love this post.
In this post not only have I listed out the top 12 musicals to watch based on the age of your child but I have also included printables that will enable you to help your child appreciate music.
So here goes
3 – 5 Year Olds
– Dr. Seuss – How The Grinch Stole Christmas – Obviously this movie, needs no introduction, does it?
– Jungle Book – Another adorable musical that I’m not going to waste your time explaining, because I know that you already know the storyline. So why not watch it again, this weekend?
– Beauty and the Beast – Again, another story that needs no introduction
6 – 9 Year Olds
– Annie – Whether you choose to watch the 1980s version or the 2000s version, there is no doubt that this little orphan girl is going to warm the hearts of the entire family.
– The Sound Of Music – So iconic and beloved, where do I start? Not only will this movie leave you all singing the many catchy tunes, but it will also teach your kids about the events surrounding WWII. So what better way to blend the teaching of music and history?
– My Fair Lady – No matter how old you are, you simply cannot, not love Audrey Hepburn. This movie based on the book Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw, will have your entire family singing and dancing all night.
9 – 12 Year Olds
– Sister Act – I simply love watching Whoopi Goldberg the most unlikely nun, if there ever was one, in this hilarious musical.
– Fiddler On The Roof – This is a heart warming story of a Jewish father trying to find good husbands for his daughters, in the midst of growing anti-Semitism. A ‘must see’, movie that can also teach your kids much about the Progroms in Russia.
– Grease – This lovely teen musical about ‘good girl’ Sandy and ‘bad boy’ Danny, is going to be a big hit with your tweens. It will also be a fantastic introduction to the Disco era in music for your kids.
12 – 14 Year Olds
– Footloose – Can you imagine living in a town where music and dancing is banned? I’m sure neither can your teens. So this is no doubt going to be a hit with them.
– Chicago – This musical set in the great ‘Windy City’ is one that I love.
– Les Miserable – With a stellar cast, the novel, made into a broadway and then a movie is one not to be missed.

My daughter loved the games, but there were also worksheets and videos. The weekly lesson plans were complete, and I never questioned what I should be doing next.
This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.
