When I tell parents that they can teach their kids music in the homeschool, one of the questions I hear over and over again, is where do I begin?

So today, I thought I should address this issue and show you how you can categorize music activities into different themes and then use those themes to introduce kids to music appreciation in the homeschool.

You can either decide to try out a single theme per week, or even try out a single theme per month.

In this post I’m going to cover four different themes and show you how you can expand on each of these themes and teach your pre-schoolers music appreciation in the homeschool.

However, if you want a more comprehensive set of activities with a different theme per month, then please read my post 12 Innovative Musical Themes To use In Your Homeschool.

Anyway, as always I have included adorable printable exclusively for this post, so please don’t forget to download them, before you move on.

So without further ado, let’s get started.

Composer Studies

Yes, you can teach composer studies for kids as young as pre-schoolers.

So what exactly will you do?

Colouring pages, copy work, learning simple facts about where the composer was born, his nationality, and listening to his compositions are some of the activities you can do.

Instrument Studies

No, your pre-schooler is not too young to learn about different instruments.

Let’s say you want to teach him about the violin.

You can teach him simple facts about it, like it is a member of the string family, you can teach him about its origin and say that the string family makes up the largest section of the orchestra and so on.

Eras in Music

Again, he’s not too young to learn about the eras in music.

If anything he’s going to be totally intrigued and love every moment of it.

When it comes to eras in music there is so much you can cover, such as teaching him all about the clothing, transportation, and the musical instruments of the era.

Music Genre Studies

Even though your little one may seem very young, it is not too early to introduce them to different genres of music.

All you have to do is to pre-select a few different genres to introduce them to, create a playlist for each genre, play the music in the background in your homeschool and then reflect on it.

Use the adorable worksheets I have made available with this post.

Play Piano Today!

Teach your child to play piano, today.

Yes, in as little as 30 minutes I can show you how to teach your child to play the piano, for FREE.

What are you waiting for?

This program reminded me (and allowed me to teach my son) how to read music. To me, that was the most important thing that we learned together. Of course, it was very rewarding for me to watch my son play the piano with both hands at the same time, while reading sheet music. His favorite parts of the course were actually playing the songs and doing the worksheets provided.
